Sumatra, one of Republic Indonesia's big island, is a nice island to make jurney. The journey should be started from Medan (North Sumatra), Bukit Tinggi (West Sumatra), Jambi, Palembang and then Java, Bali, etc.
I encourage you to start from Medan, the province capital city, because there are a lot of tourism spots in North Sumatra. Another most important reason is the only one international flight port in Sumatra is found in Medan. It is called Polonia.
In Medan you can visit national museums. For night entertainment, you can visit pubs or discotheque.
What are other tourism spots to visit then ? You can visit Bukit Lawang, about 4 hours drive by bus or car You must spend a day for the trip.
Or you have the choice to visit Berastagi. It takes about a 3 hours drive from Medan. In Berastagi you can enjoy the sight-view. The climate is cool. You can buy fruits and nice flowers in Brastagi. You should spend your night in Brastagi.
Then you can continue your journey. You can visit Parapat. It takes you about 5 hours from Medan by Bus. In Parapat you can see Lake Toba. You should not miss it ! Spend your night here.
After visiting tourism spots above, you can visit Bukit Tinggi by bus from Parapat. It takes about 10 hours drive by bus. Bukit Tinggi is a nice place to visit. There are many nice tourism objects, such as museum and zoo. The panorama is the best, I think, in Sumatera. The climate is cool. Don't forget bring your jackets. If you have plenty of time, you can go to Padang to have the sunrise and watch the sunset at the sea. It takes about 3 hours drive by bus to Padang.
From Bukit Tinggi or Padang, you can visit Jambi. In Jambi you can see Candi Muara Jambi. It takes about 12 - 15 hours drive from Bukit Tinggi or Padang.
If you still have plenty of time, you can take a bus or buy a plane ticket for Jakarta (Java) from Jambi. You can arrive in Jakarta arround 12 hours drive by bus, or take an hour flight from Jambi.
